Unbidden Light
(Complete at 70,000 words, seeking representation)
In 1637, Anne Hutchinson stood trial for heresy in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Charismatic, learned, and dangerously outspoken, she was condemned for claiming a direct relationship with God that challenged the orthodoxy. She was ultimately banished from the colony and excommunicated from the church.
Unbidden Light follows Anne from England to Massachusetts to the wilderness of Rhode Island and, eventually, to New Netherland, where she meets her end in a brutal massacre. Inspired by the historical record while excavating what has been left unsaid, the novel traces Anne’s unraveling and remaking as she sheds the categories that once defined her, becoming something stranger and more visionary.
